A Season Opener of Lyricism, Drama, and Depth

Settle Orchestra opens its 2025/2026 season with a rich and evocative programme under the baton of conductor Andre Chan, exploring music of powerful contrast and emotional colour. From bold Romantic gestures to folk-inspired charm, the concert invites audiences on a journey through the expressive heart of 19th-century Europe.

Programme Highlights

Bruckner – Overture in G major
Anton Bruckner’s Overture in G is a rarely performed gem from the composer’s early period. Written in 1862, it already hints at the grandeur and intensity of his later symphonic writing. With soaring string lines and dramatic dynamic shifts, it’s a compelling concert opener that reveals Bruckner’s early mastery of orchestral form and emotional contrast.

Sibelius – Spring Song
In contrast, Jean Sibelius’ Spring Song brings a sense of serenity and light. Originally titled Improvisation for Orchestra, this lush miniature celebrates the awakening of nature and renewal, unfolding gently with characteristic Nordic melancholy before blossoming into radiant optimism.

Dvořák – Legends, Nos. 9 & 10
Dvořák’s Legends are poetic tone pieces, each with its own narrative atmosphere. Numbers 9 and 10 capture both the lyrical tenderness and rhythmic vitality of the composer’s Czech heritage. These short, characterful works offer a delightful window into Dvořák’s gift for melody and his skill in blending folk influences with classical form.

Dvořák – Cello Concerto in B minor
The centrepiece of the programme is Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B minor – a towering masterpiece of the Romantic repertoire. With its sweeping melodies, rich orchestration, and deeply personal character, the concerto has captivated audiences since its premiere in 1896. Settle Orchestra is thrilled to perform with our lead cellist and soloist Bob Buller, whose expressive playing promises to bring out the full emotional depth of this extraordinary work.
