About Settle Orchestra

Settle Orchestra is a flourishing community orchestra based in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. It comprises professional musicians and competent amateur musicians of a wide age range, including many talented young players.

Each term we give two performances of a concert programme, usually one in Settle and one in Skipton. Our musical tastes are eclectic, covering the standard symphonic repertoire, light music and film music. We also enjoy performing in joint events with other community musical societies.

The Settle Orchestral Society was formed in 1967 and follows a tradition of music-making in Settle that dates back to the nineteenth century. This tradition includes the Victoria Hall Music Hall concerts, the musical friendship of Dr Buck and Edward Elgar, the Zion Chapel Orchestra, the Giggleswick Church Orchestra and the Settle Amateur Operatic Society.

For more than twenty years Settle Orchestra was directed and conducted by the local composer, Arthur Butterworth. Howard Rogerson took over in 1992, remaining for 15 years until July 2007. Darren Everhart became the current musical director and conductor in September 2007.

Rehearsals take place during the school term on Friday evenings at 7.30pm at Settle College. We are always keen to hear from potential new members!

As a Registered Charity (number 1025554), Settle Orchestral Society relies on the financial support of its members, friends, patrons and sponsors.
